Developing Mental Strength in Work, Life, and Sport

We often find ourselves wondering what makes a good athlete, a good leader, or even a great leader? How comes that some individuals achieve their dreams while others do not?

Mental Strength, What Brings the Difference?

Often, we view the answers to these questions by looking at the gift of these top performers. He is the most brilliant scientist in the research team, he is the fastest among the others, or she is the smartest business tactician.

However, we all know it is much more than that. If you look at it keenly, your intelligent and talent do not contribute as much as you may think. According to my research studies, at the extremely best, intelligence provides only thirty percent of your success.

What Plays A Bigger Role Than Intelligence or Talent?

Research reveals that your mental strength also referred to as grit, plays a significant role in achieving your health, life, and business goals, besides other factors. This is good news because its impossible to change your genetics, but you have so much to do regarding developing your grit or mental strength.

Grit concerning The US Military

More than a thousand cadets join the West Point united states military academy every year. The first summer on the training requires the cadets to do a series of ruthless tests commonly referred to as Beast Barracks. According to research done at the West Point cadets, the brutal tests are deliberately put into place to access the emotional, mental, and physical capabilities of the cadets. You might think that those who successfully go through Beast Barracks are stronger, more intelligent, or bigger than their colleagues.

However, research by Angela Duckworth, a researcher from the University of Pennsylvania, revealed something different. After studying the high school rank, potential leadership score, physical amplitude exam SAT scores, and Grit scale to more than two thousand cadets, she found out that it was grit that brought the difference. It was the grit in terms of mental strength, perseverance, and passion that predicted the likelihood of a cadet to be successful rather than their intelligence, talent, or genetics.

When Is Mental Strength Important?

Mental strength is useful in a variety of fields, as revealed in Duckworth’s research. National spelling bee competitors defeat their colleagues because of their grit and commitment to practice and not because of IQ. Research shows that undergraduate students with more grit achieve higher GPAs than the others despite not being as smart and having a lower SAT.

The hypothesis that grit is essential for high achievements gets boosted during professional interviews in the fields of academia, journalism, medicine, and banking. The professionals cited grit as the aspect that differentiates the top performers in their field from other employees. Most of them were impressed by the success of individuals who, at the first impression, did not seem as talented as others but maintained exceptional ambition and commitments. Angela Duckworth notes that most of the professionals got surprised by the fact that most of the gifted peers did not emerge as the top performers. You have also probably come across people who squander their talent or individuals who do all their all to bring out their utmost.

Here is the bottom line:

Your amount of perseverance, mental strength, and grit are what majorly determine your success level in life. This means that talents are hyped.

Mental strength and grit have equal consistency. For instance, mentally tough leaders are more consistent than their colleagues and have a specific goal that they work towards achieving. Nothing deters them from going towards their vision, be it fewer profits, hectic schedules, or negative feedback. Similarly, metal tough athletes do not miss workouts, assignments, and always support their teammates. Mentally strong writers, artists, and employees still work like pros and consistently.

Irrespective of your talent, grit, and perseverance can be your defining characters and can help you achieve exceptional levels of mental strength. How can you improve your mental toughness and grit?

1. Determine the Meaning of Mental Strength to You

Though mental strength is an abstract quality, it is tied to concrete actions when it comes to the real world. You need to determine what you should accomplish to prove to yourself that you are becoming mentally tough. This might be doing mediation ever morning, working out every day without missing or staying a month without eating processed food. This takes us to the next point.

2. Mental Strength Get Developed Via Small Physical Wins

It is impossible to be consistent or committed with a weak mind. You have most probably missed several workouts because the mind told you were tired. About ninety-nine percent of failures result from the weaknesses of the mind and not the body. Most often, we tend to think that high mental strength gets determined by our response to extreme situations. Example, keeping ourselves together while grieving a family member or our performance in a championship game. However, while the extreme conditions test our mental strength, perseverance, and courage, mental strength is developed through small wins. The personal choices that we make every day are what builds the mental strength muscle. To build your mental strength will be determined by the physical actions that demonstrate your mental fortitude.

3. Mental Strength Is Not About Your Motivation; It’s About Your Habits

Developing your mental strength is all about enhancing the daily customs that give you the ability to stick to a specific schedule and go over the distractions and challenges now and then. Mentally strong and robust people need to be more consistent rather than being talented, intelligent, and more courageous. They need to build a system that helps them to aim at their goals regardless of the obstacles encounter.

Essentials for Developing A New Habit

  • Concentrate on small habits rather than life-changing behaviors
  • Come up with a routine to keep you going despite how motivated you feel
  • Remain consistent with the schedule without focusing on results
  • When you get out of the track, get back as quickly as possible

Mental strength is all about your habits and doing what you need to do consistently.

How Have You Built Mental Strength?

Our focus is to live healthy lives and make a positive impact on the world. Despite the strategies we discuss, the goals we set, and the vision we have, none is achievable without perseverance, mental strength, and grit. Extreme tough moments that need high resiliency, courage and grit will always present, and this is the time for you to show your mental strength by staying on schedule. After all, toughness goes down as being more consistent than the others.

You are your biggest supporter.
