In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I going to talk about embracing the unexpected in life and how this simple shift in mindset can create growth and happiness.
The way we see and define the world, is largely dependent on our upbringing, values instilled in us by our friends and families, and from the culture and society in which we exist. Sometimes, this means that we end up living within a world that is based on limited perception, where we filter out the things that don’t fit our ideals or previous experiences.
For many, it is accepted, but when we experience the world in such a way, we limit the extent of our reality. These predefined parameters are sometimes referred to as internal maps, but not everybody sees these maps as completely limiting. Author James Joyce was well known for understanding that these parameters were something that could be reinterpreted and expanded upon. To him, they were instead, ‘errors’, which could eventually lead us to new truths.

The decisions we make are not based on immovable parameters. The world is not fixed, and there is no fate affecting our reality. The unexpected can still occur, and it should be embraced. Allowing values and past experience to dictate our perception of reality, would be equal to blinding ourselves to a truly thrilling, unique, and meaningful experience.
Conversations play a major role in how we see things, either fixed, or unexpected. Conversations can constrict our vision, but at the same time they could also expand what we see. If conversations don’t limit our understanding of values and order, then they have the potential for us to create new understandings of reality, including ourselves and the world around us. Conversations don’t need to be literal, but instead represent everything we see, hear, read, and talk about. To grow, we must expect and embrace the unexpected, by removing the boundaries of our limited experience and understanding.
It’s a case of the old (but undoubtedly true) cliché – change your perception, change your reality.
“Nothing in the horizon limits vision, for the horizon opens all that lies beyond itself. –James Carse
