In addition to the information in this podcast and the referenced blog post here are 4 reasons why people use busy as an excuse.

Busy as an Excuse #1 – My life is disorganized.

  • If you have a desk at work, and it’s littered with papers, and stacks of this and that, and your bedroom is a literal “Danger Zone”, (…and I don’t mean the “cool” 1980’s Top Gun kind either), it’s usually an indicator of what your internal life is like. I know all about it.
  • See if this fits someone you know: If the inside of your car…. looks like a bomb went off inside it, you’re probably just a wee-bit stressed-out right now. (just a guess).

Busy as an Excuse #2. I tend to leave everything to the last minute.

  • If “Stress” was a gas tank— then leaving everything for the last minute would have to be the fuel.
  • I can be an expert in “looking busy”, but in reality I’m scrambling at the last minute, because I didn’t plan well.
  • If you’re like many people, you really are just a few minor adjustments away from experiencing massive change in your life. One thing you can do is: Take time to plan your day and week— in advance.

Busy as an Excuse #3. My life’s vision got a little blurry.

  • “Without a vision, people perish.” Perish literally means: an inward suffering and decay. Isn’t it true, that sometimes we make these lame-sauce excuses, simply because we’re empty and depressed? “Ahhhhhh the world is ending, and my life is over.” No, you’ve got yesterday’s cheeseburger grease on your glasses, and you just need to wipe them off, get clear about what you want, and soon you’ll be singing, “I can see clearly now the rain has gone.”
  • Getting a fresh vision for your life and taking time to write down specific action-steps you’ll need to move it forward, will absolutely do wonders for those little “I’m too busy!” temper tantrums “you-know-who” has. Everything is going to fall into place.

Busy as an Excuse #4. My habits and rituals have gotten way out-of-whack.

  • You know what I’m talking about. I’m sure you can relate. You used to get up early. Maybe you were one of those strapping young speed-walkers who strutted her stuff in that baby blue sweat-suit. You had your morning music or podcasts all set. You had those cool looking white ear buds on— you know you had it going on. (Uh-huh) But what happened? Somehow…. now… it’s just reality that… “I’m too busy!” But could it be that it’s just an excuse? And Ohhhhhh… does it shows up in so many forms…
  • ? Watching too much TV.
  • ? Wasting time on the internet.
  • ? Working too much, and then being too tired to give anything back to the people you love. (….ouch. )
  • For me, when I feel like I don’t have time, I can get cranky and critical. I’m just being honest. At times I’ve caught myself being “the expert” at someone else’s job, but I’m dead-dog blind as to the fractured areas in my own life that need to be fixed. Ever been there?

Breaking out of the cycle of using busy as an excuse

If you’ve fallen into this trap of saying “I’m too busy!”, I just want to let you in on a little secret— you’re not alone. The key to overcoming it, is to know where you’re at, and to know where you want to go.

You’ve got to take some time and find out who you are now, and who you want to become. Determine in your heart that you’re going to remove that lame-sauce excuse, “I’m too busy!” completely out of your vocabulary.
