212 Degrees And Mediocrity

What does boiling water have to do with your success?

A lot, it turns out.

And it comes down to a simple factor:  one degree of difference.

212 Degrees Makes All The Difference

In a helpful video called 2120: The Extra Degree, Sam Parker and Mac Anderson explain the difference between mediocrity and excellence.  And it comes down to just one degree.

At 211 degrees, water will not boil.  It does not matter how long that water stays at 211 degrees; if it never reaches 212, it will remain just short of boiling. What does it take to get to 212 degrees?  A little more heat, a little more intensity, a little more power.

Now compare this to life.  The difference between mediocrity and excellence is one degree.  It is one degree of effort, one degree of passion, one degree of determination.

Where are you in your life?

Are you moving along at 211 degrees?

Do you just get by?

Are you just doing what needs to be done—not failing but not excelling either?

Do you feel like you are just shy of your potential?

The solution is to raise the heat and reach 212 degrees.  If you are stuck at 211 degrees, you will never get to 212 degrees by doing what you have always done.  Many of us are guilty of doing the same thing day after day and expecting different results.  But until we change what we are doing, we will not get different results.

To reach excellence, you must be passionate.  Passion is what increases the heat.  Passion will help you get up when you stumble.  It will be what motivates you to push through, even when you can’t see the other side.  It will carry you through the disappointments and late nights and give you the courage to keep pressing in when naysayers start questioning you.

The average person lives at 211 degrees.  He gets by well enough and gets enough done.  But he does not boil.  He does not excel.

Do you want to be average?

If not, you need to turn up the heat and intensity.

What are you passionate about?  What does 212 degrees look like in your life?

Decide where you want to be and then determine the steps that you must take to get yourself there.  Once you know where you are going and how to get there, it is time to take action.  Pursue excellence with passion.  Take the first step and then the next.  Do not let up, do not get distracted and do not let discouragement overtake you.  Success is just one degree away.
