Essentials of A Personal Development Plan

In my last Warrior Mind Podcast I talked about the importance of a creating a personal development plan.  A plan that, at its core, covers your
mental, physical, emotional and spiritual development strategy.

You see, you create the joy and suffering in your life…but only all of it.

So, it’s up to you and only you to take responsibility for the results in your life.

It’s up to you to change and enhance the circumstance and results in your life.  The best way I know how to do this is through a detailed personal development growth plan.

To help get the ball rolling I’ve highlighted a few things to consider before you start putting pen to paper…well more like fingers to keyboard.

Decide What You Want.  Take a look an area or areas of your life that you want to change or improve and make a decision as to what you want.  This is instead of what you DON’T want.  This is a critical step so make sure you know what you want.

Make a list of resources that will be helpful in making those changes. This list can include blogs (like this one) books, audio’s, video’s, web sites, software and online courses. Schedule a specific amount of time each day to use those resources in pursuit of your goals. Take notes on what you are learning.

Taking notes will help you keep track of your progress. This will also provide you with tangible data if you plan to evaluate your efforts and developments toward your goal. Take action steps.

Usually a good personal development program will have action steps included but if not, make up your own. Celebrate your success with a reward worthy of your efforts. Repeat until you experience the success you desire.

Start with something that you can achieve in a short amount of time so you don’t get discouraged by how long it’s taking to finish.

Take Responsibility. You are responsible for your own progress. You are responsible for what you are today and where you are today. That means it’s your job to initiate the steps involved in your own personal development. If you don’t bother no one else will. It also means you own the result and no one else is to blame.

Think About Your Intention. Whatever you intend eventually becomes your reality. Find your true intention before you resolve to do something and make sure you really want what you say you want. If your goal and your intention are not aligned then you’ll think up lots of excuses and all sorts of situations to prevent your progress.

The only time we fail is when we don’t try. I see so many people quit because after a few attempts they haven’t succeeded in whatever it is they’ve set out to achieve. And then they say they’ve failed. This is one of the worst social conceptions that needs to be broken down. Failure, or finding a way how not to do something isn’t real. It’s a lesson learned in disguise.

Remember, there is no failure only feedback.  You always get a results, it just might not be the one you wanted. Having a results now gives you a choice on how to proceed, and action provides feedback.

As you create your personal development think of it as a spiral at the center is you, your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual selves.  Once you have created a plan for those you than spiral out into the other areas of your life, these can include:

1. Career or job

2. Financial

3. Relationship

4. Personal

5. Health/Appearance

6. Recreation

7. Community

It might be tempting to jump in and being a plan for one or more of the above, hold off.  Work on yourself first and you might just find that the other areas of your life fall right into place.

You are your biggest supporter.
