Bungee Jumping Life Lessons: Warrior Mind Podcast #342

Over four years and going strong!  With over 500,000 downloads from over 9 countries and 5 continents’…. this isbungee jumping the Warrior Mind Podcast.

In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I going to talk about my recent bungee jumping experience and how it applies to life.

Recently, I bungee jumped off a 250-foot bridge (the tallest jump in North America) here in Central Oregon and plummeted towards the rock exposed Crooked River below. It was one of the most thrilling and exhilarating experiences in my life.

7 Life Lessons I Learned From Bungee Jumping

Imagine Success

As soon as I made my reservations I began to see a successful jump.  Not only see it, but feel it and hear it.  I knew if I thought about too much I might come up with way too many reasons not to go.  So, from the onset I mentally rehearsed walking up to the crew, getting geared up, climbing up the platform and then jumping.  I can tell you I’m VERY glad I did.

Trust the Team

As I approached the check-in area the team made me feel secure, safe and comfortable.  I knew I could trust them.  I HAD to trust them, this was my life we’re talking about.  There’s great calming in trusting your team.  The team can be your marketing team, sales team or sports team, but trusting in your team is critical for success!

Trust the Gear

Part of trusting the team is trusting the gear.  Trusting that the team knows what they’re doing with the gear, testing the gear and replacing it when need be.  There is no place for doubt when it comes to the gear.  After you jump, it’s the gear that’s going to save your life.  In life, this gear can be an automated marketing system, marketing material, personal sports equipment or even your athletic shoes.

Have Purpose

Sure, it’s fun to feel the adrenaline rush, but once it’s gone then what? To have a purpose for the jump (and life) is to give it meaning and can provide a catalyst for change.  This can be a metaphor or can be the beginning of breakthrough.  Having a “why” for the jump can provide ongoing inspiration.

Follow Instruction

There is no place for “I know that” standing 250 feet above a raging river.  The crew knows exactly how to create a safe a fun jump.  If you don’t listen, you’ll screw it up for sure.  Like in life, the deadliest words are “I know that.” It’s essential to keep an open mind and beginners attitude for success.

Jump

Take action! Hoe many of us have a purpose, trust and then freeze up at the last moment.  This could be asking someone out on a date, giving a presentation, or jumping off a bridge.  Once all the preparation is done, it’s time to take action.  After all, isn’t that what you’re here for!?

The thing about fear is that it will always be there. It will hold you captive and keep you emotionally frozen if you allow it to. Bungee jumping literally forces you to jump in the face of your fears. It teaches you to push through your fear and turn it into courage. And the feeling of pride and accomplishment afterwards is priceless.

Live in the Moment

The biggest thrill from bungee jumping undoubtedly comes from the free-fall and rebound. Afterwards, you fly upwards again as the cord recoils, and then oscillate up and down until you’ve used up all your energy. After this, you’re basically left hanging in mid-air for a minute or two with nothing but the bungee cord keeping you attached to the bridge. This is the part that I actually enjoyed the most.

During that moment, time seemed to stand still. I just spread my arms out and let go and enjoyed the moment. I felt a sense of euphoria followed by a feeling of peace and calm. It was such a Zen moment for me.

What I took away from this, is the importance of living in the moment. Stop thinking too much about the future or dwelling in the past and focus on today.

Reflection

For my birthday, I decided to take a risk and trust that it would all work out. I was ultimately willing to take responsibility for my actions no matter the outcome.

Life itself is risky and there’s no way of telling whether the decisions you’re about to make are right or wrong until you’ve made them. You just have to accept responsibility for your actions afterwards. You have to take that risk and have faith that it will pay off. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won’t. In the end, at least you have faced your fears and taken that leap of faith.
