When setting expectations – Jocko Willink

“When setting expectations, no matter what has been said or written, if substandard performance is accepted and no one is held accountable—if there are no consequences—that poor performance becomes the new standard.” Jocko Willink

As a mental strength and peak performance coach, I often find powerful insights from influential leaders. Today, I’m reflecting on a powerful quote (above) from Jocko Willink, a beacon of leadership and discipline.

Setting Expectations

This statement is a cornerstone in understanding the dynamics of performance, not just in teams but also at an individual level. Let’s dive into its essence:

  • Setting High Standards: Expectations act as the north star for personal and professional endeavors. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, an athlete, or a professional in any field, the standards you set for yourself pave the path for your journey. Aim high, and your efforts will follow.
  • The Trap of Acceptance: It’s human to err and falter. However, the critical factor lies in how we respond to these setbacks. Accepting substandard performance, especially without analysis or an action plan for improvement, subtly shifts our benchmarks. It’s a slippery slope where the ‘acceptable’ slowly degrades to ‘mediocre,’ and before we know it, to ‘substandard’.
  • Accountability and Consequences: Holding oneself accountable is the bedrock of growth. It’s not just about facing consequences when things go wrong but also about owning up to our performance levels. This responsibility drives us to not only acknowledge our shortcomings but also to actively work towards overcoming them.
  • Preventing the New Low Standard: When poor performance is overlooked, it becomes a silent norm. This new ‘standard’ then dictates our future actions, decisions, and, ultimately, our success. It’s imperative to recognize and address this not just in teams or organizations but within our individual practices as well.

In essence, Jocko’s words ring true across all aspects of life. As individuals striving for peak performance, it’s crucial to maintain high standards, hold ourselves accountable, and consistently push beyond our comfort zones. Only then can we avoid the pitfall of setting a ‘new low’ as our standard.

Remember, the path to excellence is paved with high expectations, relentless pursuit, and uncompromising standards. Let’s embrace this journey with vigor and resilience.
