Mental Strength Tip #16 – Logic vs. Emotion

Achieving peak personal performance and personal success begins with a mental strength mindset and empoweringmental strength beliefs.  Personal success starts in the mind and finishes with personal performance…taking massive action.

This is one in a series of mental strength tips to help start your week of strong so that you can reach you peak personal performance, personal success and enhance your personal development.

I take one subject and run though a brief overview of it, then ask some very direct questions.  The intention of these ‘sessions’ is for you to write the questions in a success journal reflect on them and answer them.

This series of posts is for YOU!  If I’m not able to coach you personally one-on-one, I want you to at least get the benefit of “virtual” coaching.

Objective of this Mental Strength Tip:

To help you understand how the roles of logic and emotions play in personal success and how to identify and separate the two for maximum personal performance.

Let’s Get Started:

I know, when most people think of logic they think of Spock, but really logic is based on linear thinking and is used best in business to formulate business strategy and action plans. It’s a way to think of the best way of getting from point A to Point B….logic is what you want to do.  Emotion is non-linear and is used to motivate a performer to make quantum leaps in thinking and performance.  Emotion is why you want to do something.

Questions to Uncover Beliefs about Mental Strength Thinking:

  • Do you believe the process of goal setting is more logical or emotional?
  • Do you believe there’s more power in logic or emotion?
  • Are you more logical or emotional?

Unsupportive Beliefs about Logic and Emotions

  • Men are logical based and Women are emotional based
  • Emotion has no place in the business world
  • Showing emotion reveals weakness

Mental Strength Beliefs about Logic and Emotions

  • Human begins are primarily emotional individuals
  • Logic creates the ‘how’.  Emotions creates the ‘why’
  • Showing emotion and vulnerability are sings of maturity and mental strength

Outrageous Questions

  • How have you used emotions in the past to improve your personal performance?
  • Do your results indicate that you’ve used emotion to get superior results?
  • What are your top 3 emotional motivators?

Reflective Questions:

  • How can I help you use both logic and emotions more effectively?
  • How can I help you uncover your emotional motivators?
  • What can I do as your coach to support you in learning how to best use both logic and emotions to improve your personal performance and personal success?

Mental Strength Coaching:

Make sure you understand that distinction between logic and emotion, and that emotion is where your real power comes from.  You’ll know have this understood when you know that logic is for strategy and emotion is for motivation.  Remember…emotion creates motion!

Final Thought

Most people fully understand the role logic plays in the business world yet have no idea how emotion fits into their personal success plan.  Begin by uncovering your beliefs around emotion you can start to understand how to leverage this mental strength aspect for personal success.  Professional sports coaches use raw emotion to drive performance more then any other tool to get the best out of their players.  If it worlds in professional sports, it makes sense it will work for you, doesn’t it?
