Good Luck, Bad Luck – Who Knows?
We’ve all experienced luck in our lives. Sometimes we label it good and sometimes bad.
My question is…how do we really know what it is…in the grand scheme of things?
We don’t!
We label an event to satisfy our desire to label and compartmentalize our reality…to bring a perspective sense of “order.”
But what would happen if we refused to label an event and just waited to see the long term outcome?
This would make any and all events mystery and create a curiosity to see how the event unfolds. This in turn would open us up to experience the blessing of the event. Instead of condemning or praising the event, and locking into what we label it, the event would become a teacher.
We would be more like the farmer below:
A father and his son owned a farm. They did not have many animals, but they did own a horse. One day the horse ran away.
“How terrible, what bad luck,” said the neighbors.
“Good luck, bad luck, who knows?” replied the farmer.
Several weeks later the horse returned, bringing with him four wild mares.
“What marvelous luck,” said the neighbors.
“Good luck, bad luck, who knows?” replied the farmer.
The son began to learn to ride the wild horses, but one day he was thrown and broke his leg.
“What bad luck,” said the neighbors.
“Good luck, bad luck, who knows?” replied the farmer.
The next week the army came to the village to take all the young men to war. The farmer’s son was still disabled with his broken leg, so he was spared. “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?”
My request for today is, when an unexpected event occurs, hold off on labeling it. Instead, be curious as to what will unfold.
Let me hear from you about this in the comments below.
