Develop Self-Mastery and Achieve Your Human Potential

The CrossFit games have come to an end. Personally, I am still left in awe at what these athletes and the human bodyself-mastery in general can accomplish. The truth is there aren’t many people who have the mental and physical capacity that these athletes have to endure. They train twelve hours a day, each day of the year. All to become the best in their class and to shine.

So what is it that leads these incredible athletes to achieve a level of greatness?

The difference between them and others is they have discovered their why. They know that above anything else in the world, they want to be a CrossFit champion and pursue it.

They have a burning passion for it in the soul and they have created a vision to succeed. They know they want to commit themselves 100% to the possibility of living this dream.

Over the years, I have written articles that touch on embracing your potential and being aware of the roadblocks around you. But I’ve only give you a few tips on how to do this.

Because of that, I wanted to touch on how to develop your self-mastery as you pursue your true potential. We’ll look at the reasons why, how to develop a plan and to become disciplined on a daily basis. Here, the goal is for you to succeed and to achieve self-mastery.

Like a CrossFit athlete, you have the potential to develop yourself into many of the various domains of life. But to work towards your potential, there are some important things to do. These are part of your self-mastery.

First, you must discover the why. You need to understand what your internal burning desire is.

  • What would I change about my current situation?
  • What positive changes can I make in this situation?
  • If I don’t change, what is the worst thing that could happen?
  • What is the best change I can start with to get results?
  • If I make a change, how will my life be different from where it is now?
  • If I decide to make the change, what do I need to do to make it happen?

Develop Your Training Plan

The last question actually begins the process of creating a plan or strategy for success. Whether you want to improve your golf game, be kinder to people or just manage your anger you need to train to become better. There are four areas you need to work on. Those are known as K.A.S.H.

  • Knowledge
  • Attitude
  • Skills
  • Habits

In order for you to develop these areas, you need to create a list of your weaknesses and strengths. This will give you some insight into where you are, compared to where you need to be. Based on this list, you can begin to develop each part of the K.A.S.H. and then go through the process more effectively.

Be realistic as you create this. Focus on a few starting points first and work from there. As part of your self-mastery, you want to remain on track and have forward progression, but understand it won’t happen overnight. Self-mastery does take time.

Tips for Self-Mastery

Begin by creating a daily prayer or meditation and practice it. If there is a single habit you can add to your life, it should be daily meditative practice. This powerful time used for quiet reflection will help you to boost your emotional wellness and discipline. It will allow you to concentrate and to find self-acceptance in life. All of which is essential when you want to achieve self-mastery.

Live with Balance – Self-discipline requires you to balance your responsibilities and work out the details of your life. You need to remain healthy in your mind, body and soul and that means you must dedicate time to these areas. There are a few things you can do in order to achieve this.

Manage Stress – When you are stressed, you tend to focus on unhealthy coping techniques. This includes overeating and not resting enough. Exercise, sleeping and being mindfully aware can help you to manage stress.

Exercise – Do what you can to be active for at least 30 minutes a day. This can be as simple as going for a walk. As you do this, also keep your mind active and energized.

Get Plenty of Sleep – When we are tired, we are unable to properly focus. This is according to Dr. Daniel Amen. He states our brains work best if we get at least 6 hours of sleep nightly as this will improve concentration and improve clarity.

Do the Opposite of How You Feel – This seems odd. But this is how you break unwanted behavior patterns. When you use this idea, you can begin to work away from the unhealthy urges you have. If you want to sleep in, jump out of bed. If you want to scream in rage, offer kindness. As you do this, you’ll find that you can break your bad habits and respond in healthier ways.

Connect with a Support Partner – You are a reflection of the people you surround yourself with. If you want to truly be great, then you need to surround yourself with the best people. As you do this, you’ll learn quite a bit from this. This can include finding mentors and connecting with a coach that can help you to become accountable. When you have someone who is committed to working with you to achieve your goals, you can take another step closer to self-mastery.

Stay Optimistic – Being optimistic is essential in life as it gives you the hope things will turn out for the best and mistakes are short lived. When you maintain a positive outlook in life, you can remain motivated and committed. We all have setbacks we face and they are a part of life. But this positive view allows us to avoid many of the headaches and nightmares we’d otherwise end up facing.

Note that if you want something passionately enough, you’ll do whatever you need to in order to achieve it. Decide what you want in this world and then work on boosting your motivation.
