The Power of Behavioral Flexibility

Each of us has a set of behaviors which defines us. This is known as our personality. We may come across as shy, orBehavioral flexibility hyper. Too often, we become comfortable acting a certain way and struggle with behaving in a different fashion.

So does this matter? The answer is, yes. The way we act is a reflection of where we stand and behavioral flexibility can help with that. Think of it like this, when you see a person at work what makes them more effective at their job? What makes one person better at romance? This is where we get to the heart and soul of things.

Behavioral Flexibility Explained

Behavioral flexibility is ultimately the ability to adjust our behaviors, so that we can adjust to different scenarios in the most effective manner possible. Let’s say you are the boss at work. You need to be a leader and to make things happen. Your goal is to win battles and to help push the company forward. Just barking orders doesn’t care. You need people to get together and to make things happen. You need to create a comfortable space that allows people to shine and to lead them. This means you need to make some adjustments to how you approach things in order to be successful.

Behavioral flexibility is about:

  • Having the ability to change the actions you have, when they don’t deliver the outcome you are looking for.
  • Trying to do things differently when you discover they don’t work, or because you are not getting the results you are looking for.
  • Taking the time to step beyond your comfort zone.

How do you acquire behavioral flexibility?

  1. First you need to know where your strengths and weaknesses are. This can be done through feedback and testing, so you are setting yourself up for success later on.
  1. Next, get rid of all that self-doubt and limiting thoughts. The last thing you want is to fail in life. Our results are only as good as what we understand about ourselves. Make sure you take the time to collect feedback and take a conscious look at both the good and the bad that you have going on in your life.
  1. Sometimes you have to approach the things you have no idea about. When you do this, you put yourself in front of a risk of actually having a degree of success. Life would be a boring ride if you knew how everything would turn out. Embrace the excitement and learn from the actions you take. Remember, variety is the spice of life as the old cliché says.
  1. Don’t settle for the way you’ve always done things. Heart surgery was once done ineffectively and the chances of survival were slim. As doctors studied more and introduced new techniques, the survival rate increased. Take a chance on being successful by changing things up at times.
  1. You are a reflection of those around you, make sure you surround yourself with insightful and positive people and remove toxic individuals from your life.
  1. Reflect excellence and happiness in your life. Find successful people you admire and work your life to mirror theirs and you’ll find that you can do incredible things.
  1. Learn all you can about your mentors and how they found success. Study their mindset, attitude, beliefs and values. You’ll want to make sure you have all those in your own life.
  1. Use what you learn from them and incorporate them into your own life for success.
  1. Expand your education and strive to gain a better understanding of things.
  1. If you are getting the outcome you want, then continue to do what you’re doing. If not, explore variations on things. That way you can ultimately be successful and do what you can to adapt and adjust.

Ultimately, behavioral flexibility is about saying “what can I change about my thinking or my behavior that will result in a different and improved outcome?” When you have behavioral flexibility you can change and adapt to different situations; you can expand your mind, your behavior, your thinking, your performance and be flexible in your communication with others but importantly you get better results!
