Why WE Do The Things We Do: Warrior Mind Podcast #344

Over four years and going strong!  With over 500,000 downloads from over 9 countries and 5 continents’…. this isthings we do the Warrior Mind Podcast.

In this episode of the Warrior Mind Podcast I going to talk about why we do the things we do and how to change it.

Why We Do The Things We Do

Values + Attitudes = Behavior

Values: A value is an ethical rule that you feel a strong emotional commitment to. You use your values to evaluate behavior. Together, we develop values through shared feelings about what is good or bad, commendable or deplorable, important or unimportant.

Values define how you experience life, not in a physical way for instance, what you see, but in an internal way, how do you judge what you see. Values develop from how you want to relate to life experiences, whether real or imagined.

You can also feel strong emotional commitment to people, things or concepts that guide how you relate to them. These are things that you value, that are important in your life.

Attitudes: Attitude describes the opinion you have about things. You develop your attitudes from others. For instance, some of us can remember as children hearing adults say it was OK to travel 10 miles per hour over the speed limit because law enforcement officials don’t stop you until after that point.

Many times, the lessons were silent, such as parents who tailgated other drivers. The subliminal message we received as children was that this was acceptable behavior because our parents would never do anything to endanger us.

Behavior: Behavior defines the actions you take that enforce your values and attitudes. At all times while driving, our values and attitudes affect our driving behavior(s).

Now that you’ve thought about your values, attitudes and behaviors, your equations could look something like these:

Values + Attitude = Behavior And TFAR

Thoughts (Values, beliefs, attitudes) lead to feelings which lead to an action (behavior) which produce a result (or not)

You go through out your day with the equation in your unconsciousness mind most of the time. Values, attitudes and behaviors are interrelated. A change in attitudes or values will in turn cause a shift in behavior.

But what would happen if we added an outside condition? How would being late affect the equation of Values + Attitude = Behavior?

Which of the three areas would be affected first if you were late? The answer is your attitude. Values are hard to change and behavior is a response. That leaves attitude as the affected part of this equation.

You might value time, but find yourself running late. Now you are no longer courteous, conscientious, or patient. Instead you’re impatient, rude and inconsiderate.

There are times when the events of our lives cause us all to disregard our values and attitudes.
