Goal Setting: Warrior Mind Podcast #192

This Warrior Mind Podcast is based on the post “Complacent Zone – How To Tell If You’re In One”

The purpose of this Warrior Mind Podcast is to help you understand that goal setting and achieving your goals is simple, but it’s not easy.

Here’s a question about goal setting I received from a listener:

“I often wonder why the path towards obtaining goals and dreams is seemly so convoluted.

It feels like it is a process that requires a great deal of trail and error and practice in which the path is not always well mapped nor well taught.  There seems to be many rules that if not done just right result in failure.

I suppose if I were to design a system that would allow humans to create his or her world and would be somehow much more direct.  The feedback mechanisms would be more immediate like scratching an itch (a bit more to the left and bit high and awww there it is).   Where if my thoughts were in line with my goals I would feel a resonance that I was doing it correctly like a well strummed cord on a guitar.  The way it feels now is that I try the method you prescribe, I try it, wait to see if it works, if it does not change something that start again.

Do you have any thoughts as to why it is “designed” to have a system that is not more direct?

Many thanks for your consideration.” –  Tony

Why Goal Setting Doesn’t Work

The inherent problem with goal setting is related to how the brain works. Recent neuroscience research shows the brain works in a protective way, resistant to change.

Therefore, goal setting…any goals that require substantial behavioral change or thinking-pattern change will automatically be resisted. The brain is wired to seek rewards and avoid pain or discomfort, including fear.

When fear of failure creeps into the mind of the goal setter it commences a de-motivator with a desire to return to known, comfortable behavior and thought patterns.

What this means is that when you’re goal setting so outside your comfort zone (I actually call this your complacent zone) that you’re most likely NOT going to achieve it.
