Comfort Zone: How To Breakthrough it for Peak Performance
Have you ever noticed people who take their fitness to new heights have an inner drive that kicks in to swim that extra lap, do one more pull-up or jump that extra inch — all outside their comfort zone?
Businessman Bob Parsons, founder of Go Daddy Go, lists that attribute as one of his 16 rules for achieving success. His first rule exclaims, “get and stay out of your comfort zone.” Since fitness training is an excellent analogy to life, achieve success by embracing discomfort, whether you’re in the office or at the gym.
How To Bust Out Of Your Comfort Zone
Fear & Insecurity
Lazy people are stereotypically known to not work out or even come close to the edge of their comfort zone. Laziness ensues because of excuses, fear and even insecurity. Lackadaisical people may not take control of their health issues, such as weight or high blood pressure, because of fear of failure.
They are just as likely to pass up a great business opportunity by providing the excuse that if the plan goes awry, they could lose their job. Bob Parsons would tell them “Security is for cadavers.” Face your insecurities and take risks to excel in all your endeavors.
Metrics
Measuring peak performance can be subjective. Is peak performance a personal best or a world record? It does not matter. Any athlete (or dreamer or entrepreneur) is surely well outside of their comfort zone as long as they’re honest about their effort and performance.

Scoring
Fitness regimens are measurable. One month a running novice runs three miles, and 10 weeks later the runner crosses the finish line of a half marathon. When that person first tied the laces of their running shoes, it was probably hard to make it to half a mile. A threefold improvement and achieving PRs (personal records) translates into a work ethic that starts to pay off, whether with opportunity or profits. Also, keep competing with yourself. Beating your best means you have pushed past your comfort zone and now have a new goal to reach.
Confidence is Contagious
When personal goals are met or exceeded, confidence grows as well. Confidence is a non-stoppable feeling that can help push us past our comfort zone as well as fuel fitness and business goals. Increased confidence in our physical fitness increases confidence in our business acumen, social circles, parenthood, and relationships.
Sacrifices
For a person to achieve peak performance in their fitness abilities, they have to work hard and make sacrifices. Individuals on a path to success also need to complement hard work with sacrifice. Sacrifice leads to rewards. Sometimes the reward may not be money or recognition. It may just be the satisfaction of knowing that a person has achieved their personal best.
Push past limits. Your success is not in your comfort zone. Shatter the walls of your comfort zone, take risks and be bold — your future success depends on it.
The critical factor in breaking out of your comfort zone and reaching peak performance is the development of mental strength.
